Hong Kong is Asia’s World City. 2017 being the 20th anniversary of both the establishment of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, and the creation of the Hong Kong Treble Choir Association, it is doubly meaningful for this year’s 6th edition of the Choir Festival to be held in this city. We look forward to welcoming singers from all around the world to join the festival and enjoy this exciting event altogether.

Introduction

After the success of the 2015 World Youth and Children’s Choir Festival, Hong Kong will host the 6th edition of the “World Youth and Children’s Choir Festival – Hong Kong” on 17 – 22 July, 2017. The festival is organized by the World Youth and Children Choral Artists’ Association and the Hong Kong Treble Choirs’ Association, co-presented by Chinese Society for Music Education and China Music Education Magazine, and with the full support of Musica Connection Limited. This year our biennial Festival is honorably recognized as the celebration programme of the HKSAR 20th Anniversary, and even proudly supported by UNESCO Hong Kong Association.

The Festival has indeed received raving reviews from Western and Asian countries. It has attracted over 200 choirs worldwide to unite in Hong Kong for musical and cultural exchanges since 2006. It has also provided a perfect platform for universal experts, scholars, teachers and students to take part and exchange in a choral festival of international standards.

Prof. Leon Tong’s Hong Kong Treble Choirs’ Association has been on the choral stage in Hong Kong, other Chinese cities and abroad for 20 years. It organized 5 successful editions of Hong Kong International Youth and Children’s Choir Festival in 2006, 2008, 2011, 2013 and 2015 (the festival changed its name to “World Youth and Children’s Choir Festival” in 2015).

Supported by key players in the global choral scene, Prof. Tong founded the World Youth and Children Choral Artists’ Association (WYCCAA) in 2015. With choral maestros from 5 continents as Vice Presidents to share hands-on experiences in hosting large-scale international choral events, and in association with overseas experts as a non-profit organization of professionals worldwide, altogether they organized the World Youth and Children’s Choir Festival in 2015 and a next one in 2017.

The festival aims at providing a platform for top-tier choirs and choral experts, in order to build up a solid global network of choir festivals and associations from all around the world. The Association also encourages young choristers to pursue excellence in the choral singing spirit, to celebrate peace and cultural diversity.

Today, the World Youth and Children’s Choir Festival has become the major choir competition and cultural exchange event in Greater China and Asia Pacific, with Phoenix TV broadcasting previous editions live in the whole world. In 2015, 27 internationally acclaimed judges and maestros hosted workshops, and 4 world-famous choirs performed, attracting over 15,000 visitors from all around the globe to participate in the Festival.

The 2013 edition was ranked among the “Top 10 Music Headlines” by RTHK Radio 4, which rendered the Festival the most influential choir event in Hong Kong.

In 2007, Prof. Tong was honored to receive the Award for Arts Achievement (Music) given by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, highlighting his contribution to the choral scene, as well as his choral festival and cultural exchange initiatives.
